Meet Mrs. Baker's Classroom

Read. Write. Think. Grow.

My goal is to help all students discover their own strengths and talents through the content of the English curriculum and to allow them to recognize their valuable contributions to our local community and our society at large. This classroom is meant to be a safe and secure place for young adults to plan for the next step in their bright futures.

Biography

I have proudly been a public educator since 2002 and a staff member in the Mifflin County School District since 2008.  My husband and I are both graduates of Indian Valley High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  We are happy to raise our twin boys in Mifflin County.  When I'm not teaching, writing or cheering on my sons, I play saxophone in the Lewistown Community Band.  I'm very happy to live and work in the same community in which  I grew up.  Go Huskies!

Geoffrey Chaucer

Chaucer's epic, yet incomplete, work explores the morals and values of his society through his Middle English collection of tales told by an unlikely group of pilgrims entertaining each other on their way to Canterbury.

Our reading in class will be limited to the Prologue, The Pardoner's Tale, The Knight's Tale, The Nun's Priets Tale and The Wife of Bath's Tale.

Chaucer wrote for a wide audience, and not all the tales are appropriate for a high school audience!

Macbeth

William Shakespeare

The Scottish play follows the rise and fall of Lord and Lady Macbeth.  This is the bloodiest of Shakespeare's tragedies.

Wuthering Heights

Emily Bronte

The Gothic tale of love and loss that follows the Earnshaw and Linton families explores the meaning of soulmates and happiness.

Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen

This is a regency era romance that explores the social hierarchy and emphasis of etiquette created in the satirical work by a groundbreaking female novelist.

All Quiet on the Western Front

Erich Maria Remarque

Based upon the author's own experience during World War One, this novel follows the experience of Paul Baumer as he and his comrades struggle to survive the horrors of war.

Sherlock Holmes

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

These tales follow the master of deductive reason as he and his partner, Doctor Watson, solve crime.
